What this page covers
Melasma is a common skin condition causing symmetrical brown or gray-brown patches, primarily on the face (cheeks, forehead, and upper lip).
At Dr. Divya's Skin Clinic, we manage melasma with a focus on stabilization and maintenance. Since melasma can be chronic and highly sensitive to heat and UV light, we avoid aggressive protocols that could worsen the patches.
Melasma is driven by a combination of genetic predisposition, UV radiation, heat exposure, and hormonal triggers (such as pregnancy or oral contraceptives). It is different from sun spots or acne marks, and requires gentler, longer-term therapeutic pathways.
A standard clinical plan combines pigment-stabilizing topicals, lightweight sunscreens, and optional gentle chemical peels. Self-treatment with random skin-lightening creams can cause permanent skin thinning or rebound hyperpigmentation.
